ABC for Life supports students from Sentinel school who are showing signs of struggling. Without this extra support, these are the children who risk falling behind in school and never finding their true potential in life.

The danger of these children giving up on school as young as 11 or 12 is a terrible reality.

Intervention early on in their school life can change their future. ABC for Life run several different programs and need volunteers for all of them.

Love of Reading

This programme helps students who struggle to read, to develop a love of and culture of reading. Volunteering: Monday and Thursdays. One on one student/volunteer, for half an hour. It runs through out the morning 8am-12.20 and volunteers can sign up for as many half hour sessions as they feel they can commit to.

One on One Support

Code 1 students are students who achieve less than 20% when tested for proficiency in their grade level. These children are not accepted into the bridging programme as they require individual tuition, and as there are a greater percentage of children in this cohort who have special needs.

Volunteers commit to as many 45minute sessions as they feel they can do. Sitting with the student and helping them catch up with their piers. You work with the same child each week and this programme runs every day so is very flexible from a volunteering point of view.

After school programme

Sentinel Primary is located in a community that is characterized by alcohol and substance abuse, poverty and violence. Because of such a scenario the school environment becomes a safer place  for students when school is finished. The After School programme runs from 2.25 to 5pm PM. There are a number of activities including home work support, sport, educational games, art and craft and computers.

This program is entirely run by volunteers. We ask for a commitment of a minimum of one hour per week.
